The Spanish Armada was organized by King Philip II of Spain in 1588. The battle was the consequence of Englishmen, such as Sir Francis Drake , who actually led the English ships during the battle, raiding Spanish ships. King Philip then sent this armada to invade England, but this invasion failed catastrophically as he lost most of the fleet at Gravelines and losing more because of a strong storm. This naval loss of Spain led further to England's rise to power in the world as the British Empire.
