The Romanian language has speakers that are scattered across many other countries, notably Australia, Italy, Spain, Ukraine, Bulgaria, the United States, Canada, Brazil, Mexico, Argentina, Greece, Turkey, Israel, Russia, Portugal, the United Kingdom, Cyprus, France and Germany.

The use of the denomination Romanian (română) for the beautiful language (limba noastră cea frumoasă) and use of the demonym Romanians (Români) for speakers of this language predates the foundation of the modern Romanian state. The slow process of Romanian establishing itself as an official language, used in the public sphere, in literature and ecclesiastically, began in the late 15th century and ended in the early decades of the 18th century, by which time Romanian had begun to be regularly used by the Church.
