Prince Paul I of Esterházy (German: Fürst Paul Esterházy von Galántha; Hungarian: Ispán Pál Eszterházy de Galántha) (1635 - 1713) was the Count of Esterházy von Galántha (1645 - 1687), was the Prince of Esterházy von Galántha (1687 - 1712), the Count Palatine of Hungary (1681 - 1713). He was raised to an Imperial Prince in 1712, shortly before his death in 1713.
Prince Paul was born in Eisenstadt in 1635, as the third son of Count Nicholas of Esterházy. Paul founded the Elder line of the Forchtenstein line of Esterházy after his father's death. Paul was a skilled poet, harpsichordist, and composer. Paul also wrote several religious works, and distinguished himself in a military career in wars against the Turks. He was made Commander In Chief of southern Hungary in 1667. He was appointed Count Palatine of Hungary in 1681, and participated in the lifting of the Siege of Vienna in 1683. Paul was also instrumental in removing several privileges and suppressing the autonomy of surviving native Hungarian nobility. During his reign, the Esterházy palace in Eisenstadt was rebuilt.
Prince Paul died in 1713, and was succeeded by his son Michael.
