The Kievan Rus was a medieval state lasting from the 9th to mid 13th centuries. The territory of the Kievan Rus stretched from the White Sea in the north and the Black Sea in the south. The Kievan Rus was ruled by the Rurikid Dynasty, additionally it had relations with the Byzantine Empire because of the connection of Orthodoxy. The state started to decline in the 11th century and ultimately collapsed in the mid 13th century due to a Mongol invasion. The Kievan Rus was the cultural ancestor of the modern nations of Russia, Ukraine and Belarus.
